Two months of real winter down, one to go. Super Bowl next week, and then, on to dreams of summer!

For those of you who do not live in the Falmouth area, or who may not have been here before, Coonamessett Farm is a local farm. They provide fresh produce, baked goods, a fabulous buffet on select evenings, and a refreshing attitude about growing and eating local.

As an added bonus, if you sign up, you can also get email updates of the farm that,frankly, I look forward to more than my tax return!! Farmer Ron rocks!

The latest word is that the strawberries are ready....Indulge!!

Maybe the mountains? Black flies don't bite all that hard....

Well, I was going to post to say how happy I am that it is finally spring....But I hear it will snow tonight. Really? Great.

But it pales in comparison to what the poor people of Japan are facing. So bring on the snow, we can certainly take it.

Now, I know there must be balance in life; with up there is down, with dry there is wet, and hot there is cold..... I am done with the cold. Really, truly done. It is clear that I am not a winter person, although I do think the snow is beautiful.

For the first day or two.

And as long as I do not need to move my car.

It will be a treat to sit for a few minutes and comtemplate the waves.

We have a recommendation for you if you like your beach water cold! The Elzabeth Rose House in Kennebunk, is a delightful B&B located in the heart of outlet country. When you vist their site, you can tour the rooms, see the rates, and get a feel for what is in store. They are open year round, and if you say you know Leewood House, you will get extra special treatment! We think all of New England is beautiful, and should be seen....So enjoy the season, wherever you are!

Sustainable food

And you thought we were all about the beach and sunshine!! No, we are all about food too. Where it comes from, how it gets to our tables, and what the true cost of eating involves. For the answer of where it comes from, ask your local grocery store produce manager. You may be surprised...even shocked. You will understand why the produce you buy today only lasts a short while - it's been on the road a while. As for how it gets to our tables, and the true cost of eating, take a summer read in the form of "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle", by Barbara Kingsolver. Easy to pick up and put down, but impossible not to be changed.

After you finish that book, go visit a local farmstand or farm (like our fav, Coonamessett Farm), and support the people that make eating possible in your community.

Keep a farmer happy. Buy Local!!

It is certainly summer! Where last year we were begging for it to stop raining, this year we are looking for raindrops! Can't please everyone!!

The Boy Scouts are having their National Jamboree this coming week in Virginia...it is over 100 degrees there, (I guess there is some poetry in the fact it is their 100th anniversary this year). No ocean in sight. Aren't you glad you are on the Cape!?!

Memorial Weekend - Nothing to Do? We can fix that!

If the beach doesn't do it for you, there are plenty of other things to do next weekend - the start of the summer season!! If you want to shop, there is lots to do in town, for sure. But if you want an experience that's more organic, closer to the land, if you really want to get your hands dirty, then you MUST visit Coonamessett Farm!! They have a fabulous Memorial weekend line up planned, and you can eat, pick your own foods (depends on what's popped up so far), and the kids will have a great time running around, and patting the various beasts that are out and about. Think of this as your opportunity to support Ron, our favorite farmer, and when you return home, take a look around for your local farmers market. You will be glad you did!!

Well, they are promising that the end of the week will be nice anyway.... We will see. But I hope they are right, because I have quite a bit of yard work to do, and it is too hard to work in the pouring rain. I am sure we will be rewarded, after a few days of bright sun and warmer temps, with a show spring always provides. I can't wait!!

Most of us now live in a world where, if fast is good, then the speed of light is breath-taking!! But the holidays should be a time to slow that pace, enjoy the company of those most important to us, and savor the the taste of the pause.

If you would like to give someone the gift of time, then consider a weekend here in Falmouth Heights. The off-season is a beautiful, quiet time of year, with no crowds, but plenty to see and do. There is ample space for family to gather, and spend the holidays getting reacquainted.

Highfield Hall

For those of you who may not know about Highfield Hall, it is worth your time to find! Highfield was completed in 1878, standing on over 700 acres, much of which has been preserved as the now called "Beebee Woods", after the family who were the original owners of Highfield, and its sister mansion, "Tanglewood". Now, after many years of disrepair and an uncertain future, Highfield has been beautifully preserved, and is open to the public. It is a beautiful addition to the history of Falmouth, and can use our support. Go find it!

Falmouth Artists Guild

If you spend anytime at all in Falmouth, you must be impressed by the abundance of art in town - in the restaurants, public buildings, even the public outdoor spaces. And if you enjoy art, then you should check out the Falmouth Artists Guild. Opening a new building in June 2009, these dedicated members have worked hard to make the new space a beautiful place to enjoy, well, ART! The Guild is always welcoming new members, so if you would like to join, please give them a call! A new Quilt and Sculpture Show opens November 15, so what are you waiting for?! (Oh, yeah, you have to wait for the 15th!!)

The fall is, by far, my favorite season of the year! The days are still sunny and warm, and the night air is just what you want when sleeping. I love the colors, the light of the Cape in the fall, and then there are the fall food favorites....like pumpkins!!
If you are visiting Falmouth, you really should check out Coonamessett Farm for info on the Farm and how you could support it. You can pick your own produce as a member, or, as a non-member, you can still sample what's ready now and plan your dinner accordingly. You can also purchase the Farm's produce at our local Windfall Market, just a short walk from the Leewood House!

Well, my quilt guild is working on our bi-annual raffle quilt, and this year's is coming along to be a beauty - a New York Beauty, to be exact!! But I wish we could assemble it in my very favorite place to sew.....the dining room, looking at the ocean. I have almost sewn my fingers together many times because I was looking out the window and not at my work!! The blues in this quilt remind me of the many blues in the ocean...duh! We have some new visitors....

I say "visitor" because I guess they will be moving on the the skies pretty soon! This is the second nest we have been lucky enough to host (last year it was a mourning dove...MUCH neater nest- makers, I must say!), and it is a lot of fun to see their little fuzzy heads sticking up over the edge of the nest. It is good to see that they are finally able to get around on their own... I feared one of them would fall out of the nest and not be able to get back in!! Once a mother....

My favorite flowers

Every year, for a few precious weeks, there is a fabulous smell that permeates the air in my yard and comes in thru every window.....It isn't the ocean breeze, although I can love that year-round. It most certainly is NOT the feed store, with it's fragrant mixture of chicken and goat.

It is the lilacs.

Lilacs are everywhere in my yard, whites and shades of purple, and their blooms almost always coincide with Mother's Day....so much so, the smell makes Skinner's point... I have yet to miss the maternal holiday. So this weekend, appreciate what the women in your life have done for you, in matters large or small. And maybe find them some lilacs.

News from the Cape!

I am excited to announce that plans were unveiled today for a pedestrian walkway and bridge from Woods Hole to West Chop on the Vineyard. The funds are coming from the stimulus package (who knew it was shovel-ready?), and it will include a draw bridge center span that will allow larger ships and sailboats to pass thru. Very exciting prospect!! The project will take five years, and will cost more than 48 million dollars, but if you are one of those residents dependent on the ferry service, you will be counting the days!! Can't wait to see it finished!!

Well, the sun was out...but it is in no way as green here as it is year-round in the Emerald Isle!! But that's OK, because, in Ireland, you can't swim in the ocean ANYTIME of the year! (and I have photos of the kids, in August, in sweatshirts, afraid to put more than toes in that water!!)

Happily, not the case on the Cape!! Come on summer!!! And Happy Spring!

This is the room I use when at the house to do my quilting....The view may be distracting, but the sunshine never fails (even on a cloudy day!).... and the 10 foot table is a godsend for multiple sewing-chicks! (or roosters...no need to be sexist here!) Of course, most people use it for dining, but who am I to judge!?! But the summer beckons, and there will be less time inside soon....But 'till then, you can find me and my quilty friends here!! Stay warm!

Awwwww....We were SO close!!

So, we had 60 degrees on Friday, all the snow was gone, and I actually saw the little leaves poking up from my crocus..... Then, WHAM!!! Ha-ha-ha! You could hear Mother Nature laughing all the way from the Caribbean. But it is now March, and the days are getting longer, two minutes at a time. Don't forget that this weekend is Daylight Savings again (I know, I know...So soon! But remember they changed the rules on us last year), so 'Spring Ahead'!!

Here we are again....Oh, it's sunny alright, but nothing is melting because it's FREEZING! But there is a silver lining. Much of the snow added itself to the ground water last week, and now we can see the grass in most places. Can the crocus be far behind? Might be time to go visit the fabric shops!!
